The power-law tail exponent of income distributions
In this paper we tackle the problem of estimating the power-law tail exponent of income distributions by using the Hill’s estimator. A subsample semi-parametric bootstrap procedure minimizing the mean squared error is used to choose the power-law cutoff value optimally. This technique is applied to personal income data for Australia and Italy. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
متن کاملMonte Carlo-based Tail Exponent Estimator
In this paper we propose a new approach to estimation of the tail exponent in financial stock markets. We begin the study with the finite sample behavior of the Hill estimator under α−stable distributions. Using large Monte Carlo simulations we show that the Hill estimator overestimates the true tail exponent and can hardly be used on samples with small length. Utilizing our results, we introdu...
متن کاملTail Bounds for Stochastic Approximation
Stochastic-approximation gradient methods are attractive for large-scale convex optimization because they offer inexpensive iterations. They are especially popular in data-fitting and machine-learning applications where the data arrives in a continuous stream, or it is necessary to minimize large sums of functions. It is known that by appropriately decreasing the variance of the error at each i...
متن کاملPredicting the long tail of book sales: Unearthing the power-law exponent
The concept of the long tail has recently been used to explain the phenomenon in e-commerce where the total volume of sales of the items in the tail is comparable to that of the most popular items. In the case of online book sales, the proportion of tail sales has been estimated using regression techniques on the assumption that the data obeys a power-law distribution. Here we propose a differe...
متن کاملScaling Laws in Cancer: The Dynamic Behaviour of the Power Exponent p
We have previously reported that a ‘universal’ growth law with fixed scaling exponent p, as proposed by West and collaborators for all living organisms, appears to be able to describe also the growth of tumors in vivo. Here, we investigate in more detail the dynamic behaviour of p using data from the literature. We show that p initially decreases before it again increases up to or even beyond 3...
